Construction Progress Gains Momentum at Polihali Dam Project in Lesotho---- Unik Construction Engineering (Unik) Sets New Speed Records
Since the second quarter of this year, Unik has been going full steam ahead at the Polihali Dam project in Lesotho. In June, they moved a staggering 280,000 cubic meters of earthwork through explosive excavation and transport, marking a historic peak for our operations in Lesotho. By the end of June, they had already achieved 58% of the annual production target, laying a solid foundation for meeting the yearly goals. Under the centralized coordination from the head office of Unik and relentless efforts from the project department, more than 80 large mechanical equipment and vehicles have been operating non-stop on-site. At the main material field, facing nearly one million cubic meters of "non-useful release layer," the construction process has been accelerated to surpass the original plan threefold and completed the bulk of the work by the end of this month, providing the entire dam project with a "useful material" operation surface that meets the stringent requirements. The construction site is in full swing, with orderly vehicle dispatching At the same time, the construction in the spillway operation area of the dam is progressing smoothly. By adjusting the construction surface, the safety of the main dam project is ensured when it is layered from the top of the dam towards the river bed. The source of backfill material for the secondary dam and the main dam is guaranteed by arranging different construction time slots. The project team overcame severe conditions such as the bitter cold in the winter of the Southern Hemisphere, dry climate in plateau, and the sandstorm to ensure that the construction work is proceeded as scheduled. As one of the joint venture partners of the Polihali Dam project, Unik collaborates closely with the lead partner——Sinohydro Engineering Bureau 8. At present, all joint venture partners cooperate closely with clear responsibilities. The construction site is bustling with operation day and night under the premise of ensuring safety and quality. The river diversion for the dam project is completed, and the construction processes are advanced methodically and intensively. The Polihali Dam as a significant national project established and managed jointly by the government of Lesotho and South Africa was built to meet the growing water demand of South Africa, while increasing the domestic water supply in Lesotho, and reducing Lesotho's dependence on imported electricity. |
